My nameless art dolls

My nameless art dolls

It's a strange thing to not give a doll a name. I read about dolls on other blogs & doll-making sites and I can see that a lot of people create names and personalities for their dolls. I can also see that a lot of buyers appreciate that and enjoy the fact the their doll comes with a name and, sometimes, a story. All well and good. But, despite a past immersed in playwriting and telling stories in theatre, I have no desire to create character or purpose for my dolls. And so, they have no names.

Character is created as they evolve in the making process, and purpose is revealed in relationship with their 'human'. That's when a name emerges - when a relationship forms and the 'doll' takes on a purposeful existence with someone.  Does that sound a bit fanciful? I don't think so. Dolls have always had relaionships with humans - adults as well as children. I Like to think that the relationship aspect is special and that my part in the creative process just sets the scene for what is to come.

Whatever that may be.
